This was my year ahead spread for 2017. I adopted this spread from Tarot.com.
For me, interpreting the cards is as much about intuition and drawing from your own experiences and connecting dots as it is about utilizing the implied symbolism within the cards. Much like holy scripts and texts, symbolism is often interpreted differently from scholar to scholar, and between individuals. It is not always intended to be literal or rigid in its meaning. In this manner, interpretation lies deeply within your own subconscious connection to your individual experience. The cards are but a means of tapping into that connection, a tool for deep self-reflection and growth. I might draw these same cards a year from now, and they might take on a completely different meaning for me at that time. There are some songs that are like that for me. The lyrics seem to evolve and take on new meaning in different points in my life, and it’s as if the song is new to me all over again.
Without further ado, here is my interpretation of the cards:
- Sunset: Lessons from the previous year
TEN OF CUPS
Divinatory Meanings: Domestic Happiness, general contentment
This is a very positive card, and very relevant to my last year in which I felt secure in so many realms. We moved to Oregon to be closer to family, which provided a secure network of support when the man of the house works out of state (which is for long stretches of time, most of the year). I marked my 1-year anniversary at a new job that I love, where I feel very appreciated and valued. My daughter found a daycare that she loves and still provides her with before and after school care as she attends Kindergarten. In general, despite the relative difficulty of living and working apart from my partner, and being the sole care provider for our household, my life just got easier and smoother this past year.
QUEEN OF SWORDS
Divinatory Meanings: Keen perception, intelligence, clear thoughts, strong-willed, independent woman
I find this card the most interesting, as the Queen of Swords often represents a woman alone, either by choice or a widower. In my case, my partner is absent due to work for great periods of time, and that will indeed continue to be on my horizon for this coming year. The Queen is known to be quick-witted, intelligent in an analytical manner (objective, factual more than emotional), a perfectionist, with unwavering focus on her goals (sometimes to the detriment of other facets in her life). I find this to be most true from my college experience.
SIX OF CUPS
Divinatory Meanings: child-like joy, connecting with your inner child, enjoying life with ease, happiness and well-being, nostalgia, innocence, a sense of security & protection
The Six of Cups often denotes connecting to childhood happiness or memories, nostalgia, innocence, or simple joys. A huge obstacle that prevented me from working on this blog last year, was an overwhelming sense of adult responsibility and a disconnection with my inner child, which stunted my ability to be creative and feel inspired. I have only just come to this realization recently and embraced the need to face it head on with the intention to overcome it, so I know it will continue to be a challenge in the coming year. I had come used to a way of life in Phoenix that included a lot of outdoor leisure and hobbies, with thriving friendships, to a life in a state that confines us to the indoors quite often due to the rain and cold, and the darkness setting in so early all winter. It is literally pitch black before I can even make it home from work sometimes. Have I mentioned I am a sun-seeker and light worshiper? The sun and light literally energizes me. As a child growing up in Michigan, spending time outdoors was a big part of my upbringing and I find myself happiest when I can connect with nature or spend quiet contemplative time alone.
4.) Strength: How to harness your inner power
THREE OF PENTACLES
Divinatory Meanings: work to be accomplished, positive/constructive energy, carefully constructed plans, fulfillment of a creative venture or business
I was excited to pull this card in this spread. The biggest question on my heart when I planned this spread was regarding my Blog. It has been my desire for over a year to draw enough courage, inspiration and motivation to bring it to fruition.
The number three is the trine, a combination of the numbers one and two, of male and female energy, and often denotes a birthing of something new. Pictured in the card, a young apprentice works with two architects who hold the blueprints. He is the depiction of great work being accomplished through collaboration and carefully constructed plans. The Major Arcana Three card is the Empress, and she represents fertility, the birthing of creative life and abundance.
The three of pentacles often conveys a FIRST accomplishment due to efforts (not a completion). This is very encouraging to me! To me, it advises that if I lay out well-made plans and make small strides daily, it will lead to great accomplishment. This is great advice for any large or formidable task in life – weight loss, debt reduction, career advancement. Small changes add up to consistent progress, and with a plan in hand you can truly do great things over time.
5.) Advice: how to manifest your desires in the coming year
Divinatory Meanings: freedom, wholeness & attainment, fulfillment, realization of the unlimited beauty & wonder of the world
The World card depicts a dancing figure surrounded by a green wreath, representing the completion of a journey, wrapped in red infinity ribbons, with all four elements represented in the corners as the fixed astrological signs.
As the last in the Major Arcana, The World card signifies the conclusion or culmination of efforts paying off, the completion of a major project or life cycle, and a sense of achievement/accomplishment. When this card is in the future position, it is like an insistence from the universe to pursue your goals and/or desires and to have confidence that you have something great to offer or share with the world.
Another great card and positive omen! It truly gave me the sense that the universe is really favoring my pursuit of this Blog.
KNIGHT OF CUPS
Divinatory Meanings: truth and purpose-seeking, change, speedy progression, homecoming
Court cards (Kings, Queens, Knights) often represent your self or an individual in your life. Knight cards are messengers and are analogous to change, and often represent a “new you”.
Cups cards are generally positive and relate mostly to emotions, love, relationships and imply luck and abundance. They are also linked to creativity, imagination and the heart.
The Knight of Cups appears to be returning from a long journey, hence the “homecoming”. He returns to the place where he is known, and to all the things he loves from which he has been estranged.
For me personally, this Blog mark my return to things I love. It also marks a “new me”, a new creative endeavor, and creating a sense of a home here online where I am free to express my truest self and encourage others to do the same.
7.) Clarity: personal theme for 2017
KING OF WANDS
Divinatory Meanings: strength, discipline, respect, successful enterprise/entrepreneur, results-oriented
The King of Wands is a natural-born leader that looks forward to challenges and solving problems not only for his own benefit, but also for those he serves. He brings out the best in others and is an empowering being. He is a visionary and goal-oriented.
When the King of Wands appears, it may denote an opportunity in your life and your position to successfully meet the challenge presented. It might also signify advancement opportunities or that a path ahead is clear for dynamic and victorious action. He beckons you to be inspired by his masculine energy and compels you to take action and aggressively pursue your goals.
So, there you have it! What an exhilarating, positive and encouraging spread! All signs point to YES! GO! FULL SPEED AHEAD!
With a once in a lifetime spread like this, I wouldn’t want to disappoint the cards and waste this open opportunity from the universe, so expect to see more of me in the new year!
